RealNetworks unveils groundbreaking technology and expanded content with Gold release of RealOne

SEATTLE, March 5, 2002 — RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the global leader in Internet media delivery, today announced the Gold release of RealOne™, the breakthrough service that pairs the best in premium brand-name programming with innovative media technology.

The Gold release, indicating the final code-complete version of RealOne technology introduced in beta version in early December 2001, includes TurboPlay™, an exciting new feature that makes near-instant playback of RealVideo® and RealAudio® a reality for broadband PC users. TurboPlay’s super fast playback dramatically reduces the time it takes to load or “buffer” a clip prior to playback by intelligently utilizing available bandwidth on a broadband connection, typically achieving more than five times the speed of previous streaming systems. Available now, TurboPlay’s unmatched start-up, fast-forward and rewind capabilities significantly enhance the multimedia experience for users viewing sports highlights, movie trailers, news, music videos and other media-rich content on the Web. Most importantly for broadcasters, TurboPlay will not require content providers to re-encode content or upgrade their servers.

“TurboPlay is a quantum leap in the functionality of streaming media because it delivers near-instant access to broadband consumers,” said Larry Gerbrandt, chief content officer for Kagan World Media, a research and valuation firm. “TurboPlay elevates streaming to the performance levels consumers already expect from traditional broadcast media. Furthermore, the fact that there is no server retrofit required for content providers gives TurboPlay a significant advantage in the marketplace.”
